The actual name of this block varies but one thing is certain, it makes a wonderful design to showcase Christmas or any holiday seasons’ designs and colours.
We will be making the top only during the session but you will be given instructions and ideas for various backing methods for you to choose from. Also learn to make up half square triangles and sew units quickly with the chain piecing method.
The completed quilt top measures approximately 54” X 72” made up of twelve units of this block, which makes it a perfect lap sized piece to cuddle up with.
Materials to bring to the session:
- We will be constructing the blocks with the sewing machine so please bring your sewing machine with all attachments, manual and extension lead if you have one.
- Fabric: You can use quilting cotton or poly/cotton fabric for the blocks. Fabric requirements are based on 44” wide fabrics.
Look at the block above as a guide and choose your colour way as you would like.
Red accent = 1 meter
White background= 2 meters
Dark green portion of star= 1.5 meters
Light beige portion of star= 1.5 meters
Binding strip for edge=1 meter (instructions/demo will be given on how to bind the quilt in the session so if you want to hold off in deciding and purchasing the binding colour- you can wait until later).
- Neutral coloured all- purpose sewing thread.
- Usual sewing kit to include pins or clips, measuring tape and sharp fabric scissors.
- If you have a small iron & ironing pad, this is a good session to bring it along. If not, don’t worry, we have irons and ironing boards available.
Homework Instructions on cutting your fabric before you come to the session.
Cutting fabric under pressure in a session is stressful!!! So, please have your squares of fabric colours pre-cut which you can do calmly at home with a cup of tea and take your time in the comfort of your own space!
Have the following cut- but no sewing. We will do all of that on the day.
Cut 5 ¾ x 5 ¾ inch squares from your fabrics as follows:
24 red accent squares
72 white background squares
48 dark green squares for star
48 light beige squares for star
Now take these squares you have cut and divide them up into 12 piles (keep together with a clip or pin) as follows:
2 Accent colour (red on block)
6 Background (white on block)
4 Star (dark green on block)
4 Star (light beige on block)
By arranging the squares into 12 block stacks, you will be already to start to mark & sew on the day.
Don’t worry about cutting any fabric for the binding now. Measurements and instructions will be given in the session.
Remember-No sewing yet-just cutting calmly at home!
Bring along all your precut fabric and then we can spend the day constructing, sewing and arranging your blocks for the quilt top.
Plus, tea & biscuits to help too!
